Stone pine and pistachio as novel nut crops in inner Spain
17 October 2013
Stakeholders in the StarTree project organised a field trip to demonstration plots and experiments of grafted stone pine and pistachio as alternative nut crops in inner Spain.
The Forest Owners Association of the province of Valladolid (ASFOVA) and the Regional Government Junta de Castilla y León, along with the project partner INIA-CIFOR, organised a visit for forest and farmland owners to experimental plantations on alternative nut crops.
The plantations, covering some 50 hectares, are demonstration plots for grafted Stone pine and pistachio, as alternative nut crops in inner Spain. The decreasing profitabilty of traditional farming and the high world market prices paid for these nuts make them an attractive opportunity for landowners.
