Suceava RSG2 300The second RSG in Suceava took place on 5 December 2014.

The purpose of the meeting was to disseminate the results from the first period of StarTree data collection and to introduce the in-depth innovation case studies. Seven stakeholders attended representing innovation support, rural communities, forest management and local public authorities.

The sector mapping from Suceava was validated and showed that in spite of the existing potential represented by the personal consumption of homemade NWFPs based products there are few examples of business development in this direction. The main concern raised in relation to this is the need to promote innovative examples which have to be sustained by policies supporting the bio-economy. Some specific regional products were identified for the region such as the smoked trout packet in fir branches, yet there is no patent registered for this product and no formal form of production and commercialisation. The local StarTree team is expected to disseminate innovative examples at the European scale collected as part of the second period of the project and to organize a larger meeting with disseminating purposes in the next year.

The results of the household survey were presented and the discussions largely confirmed their validity. The informal sector is presented at all levels and the representative of National Forest Administration has confirmed the difficulty of controlling the organized and unorganized pickers. The level of personal consumption identified via the survey is very high and it is set especially for mushrooms and berries.

Specific requests for support were for:

1. Special training for entrepreneurship development for young people (students) so they can present ideas and the opportunities to access financial resource

2. Propose political measures to stimulate the development of local businesses for niche markets.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Programme for research, technological development and demonst ration under grant agreement No. 311919
