A new paper on the work done within the StarTree project is now available. "Exploring the interlinkages between governance and social capital: A dynamic model for forestry" by Elena Górriz-Mifsud, Laura Secco and Elena Pisani has been published in Forest Policy and Economics 65 (2016) 25–36. A Call for the Training School on "Marketing of Wild Forest Products: theory and practice" under COST Action FP1203: European NWFPs Network is now open. This Training School is going to be held in San Vito di Cadore (Belluno – Italy) on 14th -18th March 2016.  Deadline for applications is the 19th of February 2016.

StarTree 7th General Assembly focused on the final stages of the project

The 7th StarTree General Assembly took place in Krummendeich, Germany from 11–13 November 2015. The project partners met to discuss project progress to plan the final stages of the project. Much of the work planned consists of different exciting communications products, including publications for various target groups and online tools.

6GA JoensuuAR 800 1A wealth of new information and spin-off projects, including research in various Mediterranean countries, is arising from the StarTree project's Action Research (AR) and In-Depth Case Studies (IDCS).

More than 50 Consortium partners from 12 countries met for the 6th StarTree General Assembly, to discuss progress and interchange ideas on the work being carried out in the project's 14 Regional Case Studies. The meeting took place in in Joensuu, North Karelia, Finland, from 11 – 13 May 2015, hosted by StarTree partners LUKE.

field trip 35026Sparkling wine made from berries and artic bramble was on the tasting menu for the StarTree field trip and Knowledge Exchange Event (KEE). Hermanni Winery Company produces a wide range of forest berry wines and liquors although facing challenges in reaching the market and limitations on sales venues due to Finland's strict alcohol laws. A fitting setting, then, to discuss legislation issues at the third part of the StarTree KEE.

The StarTree project is at the stage where it is vital to reflect on what has been achieved so far and what is still to be attained before the end of the project. Crucial next steps will focus on dissemination activities, including scientific publications and a broad range of StarTree dissemination products. Brainstorming sessions among Consortium members over the course of the 6th General Assembly, held in Joensuu, Finland, from 11 – 13 May, generated many ideas and questions to be followed up in the next months.

strawberry 540The StarTree case studies for Llais y Goedwig focus on small enterprises that use woodlands and specifically Non Wood Forest Products (NWFPs) to generate an income in an innovative way. They show how, with ingenuity and dedication woodlands can provide us with much more than timber.
